The Old Demon free essay sample
The Old Demon In the short story The Old Demon by Pearl S. Buck, Mrs. Wang is a practical person, who takes things at face value, does whatever she thinks must be done, and accepts her fate. Foremost, Mrs. Wang takes things at face value. Seeing things as they truly are, after rescuing a wounded soldier from a fallen plane, she learns from a crowd of Chinese soldiers that he is Japanese. Though fully acknowledging that he is the adversary, Mrs. Wang saves the young man from being stabbed. The Chinese soldiers query to her concern for the Japanese monkey results in Mrs. Wangs ompelling response: If he is dead, then there is no use in sending him into purgatory all in pieces (Buck 159). Unlike the others, Mrs. Wang clearly distinguishes him not as Just one of the Japanese, but rather as an injured man who needs help. She perceives things as they are, rescuing the young soldier from a painful death. Additionally, Mrs. Wang does whatever she thinks must be done. For instance, as the silver planes crash headlong into the vast field, the villagers flee, striving to escape the burning catastrophe. Though Little Pigs wife pleads and implores her to run, Mrs. Wang seats herself against the bank of the dike and gazes at the extraordinary spectacle, replying l havent run in seventy years, since before my feet were bound (156). Stubborn, old Mrs. Wang refuses to leave and abandon her place, for she knows that she is slow and will only delay the others from escaping. Placing others before herself, she feels that it is her duty to stay behind (156). Acknowledging what is right, she puts others before herself, in spite of the fatal consequences that it holds. Lastly, Mrs. Wang accepts her fate. Exemplifying acquiescence of her destiny, in the arrival of an army of Japanese soldiers, she understands that if they are not stopped, then they will kill all the villagers. As they march across the plain, the circumstances pose a difficult choice: her death or the death of the villagers. Mrs. Wang soon realizes that there is an end to what one could see, and this is the end for her. Knowing what she must do, she opens the water sluice and unleashes the wicked river, drowning both herself and the Japanese. Mrs. Wang sacrifices her life for the villagers, prepared for life and where it shall take her. By shwetagunJan

US Foreign Policy (1890-1914) essays
US Foreign Policy (1890-1914) essays The United States approach to foreign policy had not changed conceptually from the days it signed its independence. These ideas were primarily based on protecting US interests overseas and restricting foreign influences in the Americas. Once they furthered themselves politically and economically, they gained the status of being a world power and they still wanted more. They figured they had to strengthen the country industrially as they needed worldwide markets for its growing industrial and agricultural surpluses as well as sources of raw materials for manufacturing. They could only achieve these foreign markets with more concentrated efforts on its foreign policy as America was principally guided by economic motives. The internal economic growth of the United States made them want to look outward for foreign markets. Export earnings increased from 450 million to over a billion from 1870 to the early 1890s. US businesss were soon overpowering foreign competition as even American steelmakers could easily compete with any British producer in the world. Everything seemed to be inciting the US to expand abroad. Expansionists throughout America emphasized the resources of what other lands could provide and the wealth that could result from their establishment. For example, Cuba offered an abundance of sugar plantations and land in Panama would offer America control of the canal. The economic benefits of a foreign land can be seen through an example of Americans exploring the distant islands of Hawaii. During the course of the early 1800s, missionaries from America traversed on a laborious voyage to Hawaii and ended up settling there. They offered accounts of incredible economic opportunities and possibilities in the Hawaiian islands. Consequently, other Americans proceeded to Hawaii to become sugar planters and to establish ...

The jailbroken iphones were hacked by Ikee worm (virus) that scans random IP ranges and changes wallpaper to Ricky Astleyââ¬â¢s picture. Though, no virus is found in Blackberry devices but CBC (2006) had warned that a flaw in its system could affect TIFF files. Some proponents have stated that smartphones do not need ani-virus software. I do not agree with them mainly because all technology is vulnerable to anti-virus and other forms of malware. These are destructive software that are designed to corrupt relevant information and reduce the efficiency of the device. Like computers, smartphones also become susceptible to external threats through downloads from internet or by using external storage devices that might have viruses. Hence, constant update on the viruses becomes intrinsic part of smartphones security also. (words:

The assignment is for Environmental Compliance & Safety class
The is for Environmental Compliance & Safety class - Assignment Example The Clean Air Act enabled United States to enforce laws that meet minimum standards for air quality. The Act requires the EPA to come up with and enforce regulations that guard the general public against exposure to hazardous wastes. Factors determining whether negligence has been involved in releasing hazardous materials into the environment are knowledge of the generator of hazardous material and provisions in the environment laws. A person is said to be negligible in releasing hazardous waste into the environment if he has full knowledge that he generates hazardous waste in his company and goes ahead and release it to the environment without considering its impacts to the environment (Dennison, 1995). Also, a person is negligible if he understands the provisions in Clean Air Act, but contravenes the provisions. Negligent action can be said to be a failure of doing something or observing the degree of care, which is required in the discharging of a responsibility, which the individual charged with negligence ought to have done to the injured party. In this case, the negligent individual is liable to all the problems caused by failing to undertake his responsibility. RCRA categorizes hazardous waste into eight categories, which are ignitable waste, corrosive waste, reactive waste, acute hazardous waste, toxicity characteristic waste, waste from specific and non-specific sources, toxic waste and discarded unused chemical waste. These categories help the RCRA in grouping of the hazardous waste (Dennison, 1995). Furthermore, waste can be categorized using four criteria. These are ignitability, reactivity, corrosivity, and toxicity. Ignitable wastes are those that are flammable when exposed to a source of fire. Reactive wastes are those that react with various elements and compounds in the environment. Corrosive wastes are those wastes that cause wear and tear of substances in the environment. Toxic

Psychology and the Importance in Churches Essay Example for Free
Psychology and the Importance in Churches Essay I believe psychology is important in churches today because when I look at the attitude and conduct of church members, it exhibits the function of oneââ¬â¢s mind, social behavior and development. Specifically when dealing with the mechanics of reception. Religions and churches face different possible reactions from its members or visitors which are directly correlated to the human behavior of the mind. It is easy to see how the Muslims by their social behavior are so fanatical and often times all-consuming in their faith. Muslims are more inclined to say that their religion is an important part of their daily lives. It is said that nine out of ten Muslims said their faith was more important in their lives, while the figure was 85% for Hindus and 66% for Christians. We see that there are various levels of reaction; other religions could fall into the category of having strong and mild attachment, proving that the human mind is a key ingredient into how people react and consume religion. This not only plays a role in people with religious beliefs, itââ¬â¢s also displayed in non-believers of faith such as agnostics and atheist. This is so because religion will not have an impact on some individuals; they will be indifferent, having no particular interest or sympathy. While others may be observant, willing to learn but some will still be unmoved to come to faith or beliefs. These are just a few arguments as to why I feel psychology plays a pertinent role, because people that help make up all religions will have different reactions from their minds, thus leading to various behaviors and level of belief. Along with actions and reaction, the mind will also contemplate upon past experiences, this enables one to either come to faith or not at all, based on what someone had said or done to them. This is known as locking or unlocking the mind. In conclusion, Behaviors and reactions are a state of oneââ¬â¢s mind based upon life experiences. Psychology and the human mind play an intricate role in the growth or stunt of a Religion or a Church.

Essay --
ââ¬Å"The only thing we have to fear is fear itselfâ⬠(Franklin D. Roosevelt). On October 29, 1929 The United States stock market crashed. Not long after, everything took a turn for the worse. Three point two million people lost their jobs and had no money to spare. Shock soon effected everyone and people rushed to put their money in the banks ("Stock Market Crash of 1929"). Many did what they felt they should do and they turned to their president, Herbert Hoover and asked for some guidance during this terrible event. So Herbert ordered the banks to close down, so the money that was in the banks was not returned. That turned everyone against him and they saw him as the creator of the Great Depression. The great depression had adverse effects on education and healthcare but it created a favorable government leader. During the great depression education was at a minimum, children hardly ever attended school. Many parents would homeschool their children due to the lack of teachers and school buildings. Unlike the ones who choose to educate their children many chose to not worry about educating their children and allowed them to stay at home and help with the chores and family. Unlike today children enjoyed going to school to get a little time having a normal life again Many people wonder what started the great depression. On October 29, 1929 the US stock market crashed. The stock market crashed because during the 1900s many things were being invented. Many people invested in these products but some chose to invest in the stock market. When people would invest in the stock market the prices went up. Investing in the stockmarket soon became very popular and everyone soon began to do it. The only thing bad about investing into the stock market... ... only has to stand for a couple minutes. This usually did not end very well , many people got in fights and the police always had to break it up. If you would cut you would either be kicked from the line or you would have to go to the back. Policemen usually where in the higher class at the time and had little to no trouble when it came to money so all they had to worry about was making sure everyone followed the rules. In 1933 President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected. He was the sign that the great depression was coming to the end according to the people who believed that Hoover was the cause of the great Depression. The first thing President Franklin did was reopen the bank and allow people to withdraw money. For many that was the first thing they did. Soon everything started to get back on track. ââ¬Å" The only thing to fear is fear itselfâ⬠was no longer needed.
